阅读理解 Aidan Gold stood teetering(摇摇欲坠)on the snow-covered edge of a gap on Mount Hausstock in Switzerland. The rocks and ice under his feet were unstable. For a moment, the 8-year-old from Bothell, Wash., didn’t think he would be abe to cross the huge gap in front of him. “We named the Death Gully,” Aidan told the reporter. “There seemed to be nowhere to put my foot.” He finally spotted a rock jutting out(突出)in the middle of the gap and took a hard step. “I barely got over,” he says. “ I thoutht that I wouldn’t make it.” But he did make it across——and all the way to the top of the 10,400-foot mountain. The climb up Mount Hausstock was just one of the high points of the Gold family’s recent four-month-long climbing adventure. Aidan and his father also scaled Monch in Switzerland ( 13,400 feet ) and Island Peak (20,300 feet ) in Nepal. Aidan may be the youngest person to reach the top of the Island Peak, according to members of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. The entire Gold family, including Aidan’s 5-year-old brother, Janick, reached the base camp in Mount Everest. Located between Nepal and China, Everest is the world’s highest peak at 29,035 feet. Climbers often rest at the 17,700-foot-high base camp before scaling to the top of the mountain. The Golds have been climbing mountains since before Aidan could walk. His father and mother strapped(把……系牢)baby Aidan to their backs while climbing peaks all over the world. When the family ascended(攀登)MountSi in Washington, then 3-year-old Aidan marched all the way up and down by himself. “ People just couldn’t believe it,” says Warren Gold, Aidan’s father. Aidan enjoys the peace found on the top of the world. “ I like being away from noise when I am up there,” he says.
